ABOUT G-RATED
Intended for students aged 10-13, two performers will work seven colorful puppets in this 60 minute show. G-rated is a musical puppet show about puberty, identity, confidence, LGBTQ2SIA, boundaries and consent. The show gently introduces the topic of sex and these themes in an approachable medium with relatable characters and catchy tunes. The overall aim is to introduce basic language to start conversations around topics that require some finesse. Original songs like ‘The Awkward Song,’ ‘Be Kind to Yourself,’ and ‘I’m Trying on Identities’ are written and performed in a modern musical theatre style.
By the end of the show audiences will have a basic language for fostering healthy relationships including words like boundaries, friendships, sexual preference, and self-care. A full study guide is available to help prepare the audience for the subject matter pre-show and continue the conversation in the classroom post performance.
ABOUT THE CAST AND CREATORS
G-Rated is made up of 2 puppeteers/singer/theatre artists (Nadine Tremblay and Phil Loosley) living in the West Kootenays on the traditional unceded territory of the Sinixt People. Combining puppetry, musical theatre and improv, this team of two have performed and toured Western Canada with their original musicals for all ages. Their work with youth include workshops, private voice lessons, full scale musicals, choir direction, the infamous Game Show Show and curriculum based arts education in schools with ‘Learning Through the Arts.’ Our initial aim with this show is to fill an identified gap in West Kootenay education around sex and healthy relationships, something that was being avoided by educators and parents alike. Turns out that this medium (puppets and songs) is ideal for addressing a topic that can be uncomfortable for some to talk about and potentially challenging for students to absorb
Co-written script by Almeda Glenn Miller and Nadine Tremblay, music by Nadine Tremblay and directed by Almeda Glenn Miller.
Touring BC in 2024-25 for the first time.
A HUGE Thank you to all our friends, family and supporters who funded the making of the Puppets through Kickstarter. AND the very talented Eva Linka who made these beautiful puppet people.
FAQs
How do you prepare students for this show?
We have a pre-show study guide and post show study guide designed by 4th year nursing students and vetted by teachers that will help your school prepare for what they will see in the show and keep the learning going long after the performance.
How long is the show?
The show is 60 min long and can have an additional talk-back after the show. Please note we are not experts on healthy relationships so we will do our best to answer but often questions we can answer are more arts based around puppetry, music and being an artist.
Is the show about SEX?
No, not really. The show has a song all about the different words for sex. This help students get their giggles out. It encourages curiosity for the subject but then quickly moves on to talking about what might be first steps in a relationship such as consent, boundaries, self-confidence, puberty and self-compassion; there is talk about kissing and caressing but not details around sex itself! This show is an introduction to the language we use to talk about these concepts so that they can be further discussed.
How do you prepare parents for this show?
G-Rated’s concepts are all within the BC curriculum and are generally taught in schools. Some schools choose to send a letter home to parents as a heads up that these subjects will be introduced to students through a puppet musical. We recommend that schools make available the study guide to parents prior to the show.
Can I watch the whole show in advance?
Yes you can. Please reach out to us for a full-length video version of the show.
